Aluminum and its alloys entered a main role in the engineering sectors because of their applicable characteristics for indispensable applications. To enhance requisite belongings for the components, the composition of variant metal/nonmetal with light metal alloys is essential in the manufacturing industries. To enhance the wear resistance with significant strength property of the aluminum alloy 2024, the reinforcement SiC and fly ash (FA) were added with the designation Al2024 + 10% SiC; Al2024 + 5% SiC + 5% FA; and Al2024 + 10% FA via stir-casting technique. The wear resistance property of the composites was tested in pin-on-disc with a dry-sliding wear test procedure. The experiment trials were designed in Box–Behnken design (BBD) by differing the wear test parameters like % of reinforcement, sliding distance (m), and load (N).

Examination of Crash Injury Risk as a Function of Occupant Demographics

The objectives of this study were to provide insights on how injury risk is influenced by occupant demographics such as sex, age, and size; and to quantify differences within the context of commonly-occurring real-world crashes. The analyses were confined to either single-event collisions or collisions that were judged to be well-defined based on the absence of any significant secondary impacts. These analyses, including both logistic regression and descriptive statistics, were conducted using the Crash Investigation Sampling System for calendar years 2017 to 2021. In the case of occupant sex, the findings agree with those of many recent investigations that have attempted to quantify the circumstances in which females show elevated rates of injury relative to their male counterparts given the same level bodily insult. This study, like others, provides evidence of certain female-specific injuries.

Bayesian Network Model and Causal Analysis of Ship Collisions in Zhejiang Coastal Waters

Abstract For taking counter measures in advance to prevent accidental risks, it is of significance to explore the causes and evolutionary mechanism of ship collisions. This article collects 70 ship collision accidents in Zhejiang coastal waters, where 60 cases are used for modeling while 10 cases are used for verification (testing). By analyzing influencing factors (IFs) and causal chains of accidents, a Bayesian network (BN) model with 19 causal nodes and 1 consequential node is constructed. Parameters of the BN model, namely the conditional probability tables (CPTs), are determined by mathematical statistics methods and Bayesian formulas. Regarding each testing case, the BN model’s prediction on probability of occurrence is above 80% (approaching 100% indicates the certainty of occurrence), which verifies the availability of the model. Causal analysis based on the backward reasoning process shows that H (Human error) is the main IF resulting in ship collisions.

Ducted Fuel Injection: Confirmed Re-entrainment Hypothesis

Testing of ducted fuel injection (DFI) in a single-cylinder engine with production-like hardware previously showed that adding a duct structure increased soot emissions at the full load, rated speed operating point [1]. The authors hypothesized that the DFI flame, which travels faster than a conventional diesel combustion (CDC) flame, and has a shorter distance to travel, was being re-entrained into the on-going fuel injection around the lift-off length (LOL), thus reducing air entrainment into the on-going injection. The engine operating condition and the engine combustion chamber geometry were duplicated in a constant pressure vessel. The experimental setup used a 3D piston section combined with a glass fire deck allowing for a comparison between a CDC flame and a DFI flame via high-speed imaging. CH* imaging of the 3D piston profile view clearly confirmed the re-entrainment hypothesis presented in the previous engine work.

High-Precision Autonomous Parking Localization System based on Multi-Sensor Fusion

This paper addresses the issues of long-term signal loss in localization and cumulative drift in SLAM-based online mapping and localization in autonomous valet parking scenarios. A GPS, INS, and SLAM fusion localization framework is proposed, enabling centimeter-level localization with wide scene adaptability at multiple scales. The framework leverages the coupling of LiDAR and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to create a point cloud map within the parking environment. The IMU pre-integration information is used to provide rough pose estimation for point cloud frames, and distortion correction, line and plane feature extraction are performed for pose estimation. The map is optimized and aligned with a global coordinate system during the mapping process, while a visual Bag-of-Words model is built to remove dynamic features.

A Visual SLAM Based-Method for Vehicle Localization

One of the main challenges of autonomous driving is to integrate different modules, such as perception, planning, control, and communication, that work together to enable the vehicle to drive safely and efficiently. A key module of autonomous driving is the vehicle localization system, which estimates the vehicle's position in the environment, and provides guidance for the optimal route. The vehicle localization system is essential for ensuring the safety of autonomous driving. This paper proposes a vehicle localization method based on visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) using a monocular camera. The method captures images of the environment with a monocular camera and extracts ORB (Oriented FAST and rotated BRIEF) features from them. It then tracks the features across the images and constructs a sparse map of the scene. The map is used to estimate the vehicle's pose, which is the position and orientation of the vehicle, in local coordinates.

Developing an Automated Vehicle Research Platform by Integrating Autoware with the DataSpeed Drive-By-Wire System

Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in developing algorithms and improving hardware for automated driving. However, conducting research and deploying advanced algorithms on automated vehicles for testing and validation remains costly, especially for academia. This paper presents the efforts of our research team to integrate the newest version of the open-source Autoware software with the commercially available DataSpeed Drive-by-Wire (DBW) system, resulting in the creation of a versatile and robust automated vehicle research platform. Autoware, an open-source software stack based on the 2nd generation Robot Operating System (ROS2), has gained prominence in the automated vehicle research community for its comprehensive suite of perception, planning, and control modules. The DataSpeed DBW system directly communicates with the vehicle's CAN bus and provides precise vehicle control capabilities.

Energy Dissipation Characteristics Analysis of Automotive Vibration PID Control Based on Adaptive Differential Evolution Algorithm

To address the issue of PID control for automotive vibration, this paper supplements and develops the evaluation of automotive vibration characteristics, and proposes a vibration response quantity for evaluating the energy dissipation characteristics of automotive vibration. A two-degree-of-freedom single wheel model for automotive vibration control is established, and the conventional vibration response variables for ride comfort evaluation and the energy consumption vibration response variables for energy dissipation characteristics evaluation are determined. This paper uses the Adaptive Differential Evolution (ADE) algorithm to tune the PID control parameters and introduces an adaptive mutation factor to improve the algorithm's adaptability. Several commonly used adaptive mutation factors are summarized in this paper, and their effects on algorithm improvement are compared.

Unlike conventional heat shrink tubes or enclosure systems which only seals wires and splices on the outside, a novel Acrylate based sealing technology developed and introduced by Eurotech is a low viscosity fluid formulated to be applied to the splices either in liquid droplets or by dipping, utilizes fast capillary-wicking action and quick self-cure inside the wires to form a robust, cost effective, flexible, impenetrable seal to prevent moisture damage of wire harnesses and associated electrical components. This technology is an enabler of new wire harness architectures currently limited by the shortcomings of conventional sealing products such as heat shrink tubes which come up short when the splice configurations or geometries become too complex or difficult for sealing from the outside.

Optical diagnostic study on ammonia-diesel and ammonia-PODE dual fuel engines

Ammonia shows promise as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines (ICEs) in reducing CO2 emissions due to its carbon-free nature and well-established infrastructure. However, certain drawbacks, such as the high ignition energy, the narrow flammability range, and the extremely low laminar flame speed, limit its widespread application. The dual fuel (DF) mode is an appealing approach to enhance ammonia combustion. The combustion characteristics of ammonia-diesel dual fuel mode and ammonia-PODE3 dual fuel mode were experimentally studied using a full-view optical engine and the high-speed photography method. The ammonia energy ratio (ERa) was varied from 40% to 60%, and the main injection energy ratio (ERInj1) and the main injection time (SOI1) were also varied in ammonia-PODE3 mode.

Combustion Analysis of Hydrogen-DDF Mode Based on OH* Chemiluminescence Images

Hydrogen–diesel dual-fuel combustion processes were visualized using an optically accessible rapid compression and expansion machine (RCEM). A hydrogen-air mixture was introduced into the combustion chamber, and a pilot injection of diesel fuel was used as the ignition source. A small amount of diesel fuel was injected as the pilot fuel at injection pressures of 40, 80, and 120 MPa using a common rail injection system. The injection amounts of diesel fuel were varied as 3, 6, and 13 mm3. The amount of hydrogen was manipulated by varying the total excess air ratio (λtotal) at 3 and 4. The RCEM was operated at a constant speed of 900 rpm, and the in-cylinder pressure and temperature at the top dead center (TDC) were set as 5 MPa and 700 K, respectively. The combustion processes were visualized via direct photography and hydroxyl (OH*) chemiluminescence photography using a high-speed camera and an image intensifier.

Influence of Microstructure on CFD Simulation of Water Removal in a PEM FC Channel

Water removal from Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell (FC) mainly involves two phenomena: some of the emerging droplets will roll on the Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL), others may impact channel walls and start sliding along the airflow direction. This different behaviour is linked to the hydrophobic/hydrophilic nature of the surface the water is moving on. In this paper, the walls of the channel of a FC were characterized by applying optical techniques. The deposition of droplets on the channel wall led to an evaluation of the proper range for Contact Angle Hysteresis (CAH = 55° - 45°), and due to the high wettability of the surface, droplets dimension was defined with a dimensionless parameter B/H. Under high crossflow condition (15 m/s) a sliding behaviour was observed. The channel features determined through image processing were used as boundary conditions for a 2D CFD two phase simulation employing the Volume of Fluid (VOF) model to keep track of the fluids interface.

Recently, with the advancement of autonomous driving technology, the function of external lamps has been changed. Previously, the focus was on the visibility of drivers, but with the advancement of autonomous driving technology, the concept of autonomous driving systems has been developed. Accordingly, the trend of automotive lamp lighting systems has been developed in terms of design, e-HMI (exterior-human machine interface), It is developing in accordance with three major fields such as sensor connection. Therefore, this paper will cover the prior development of road content projection headlamps that enable e-HMI implementation to reflect these new trends. Since the technology is mass-produced and sold by several manufacturers, our company also needs to quickly develop and apply the technology in advance. Only four types of symbols are allowed in European law.

Performance of Headlights Fitted with LED Replacement Bulbs

To ensure adequate visibility without excessive glare, vehicle headlights are designed to use a specific source of illumination. The optical designs of headlights gather the luminous flux produced by the light source to produce a useful beam pattern that meets the relevant requirements and standards for vehicle forward lighting. With the advent of solid state, light emitting diode sources for general illumination, an increasing number of LED replacement headlight bulb products has emerged over the past decade. In most cases, these LED replacement bulbs are not permitted for legal use on public roadways, but some countries have begun to permit specific LED replacement bulbs to be used legally on the road for specific makes, models and production years of certain vehicles. If they can be demonstrated to produce a beam pattern that meets the photometric requirements for a legal headlight, they are permitted to be used legally for on-road use.

Optimization of Body Parts Specifications Using A.I Technology

Optimizing the specifications of the parts that make up the vehicle is essential to develop a high performance and quality vehicle with price competitiveness. Optimizing parts specifications for quality and affordability means optimizing various factors such as engineering design specifications and manufacturing processes of parts. This optimization process must be carried out in the early stages of development to maximize its effectiveness. Therefore, in this paper, we studied the methodology of building a database for parts of already developed vehicles and optimizing them on a data basis. A methodology for collecting, standardizing, and analyzing data was studied to define information necessary for specification optimization. In addition, AI technology was used to derive optimization specifications based on the 3D shape of the parts. Through this study, body parts specification optimization system using AI technology was developed.
